How is HIV Spread?

HIV is spread through certain body fluids, including:

  • Blood

  • Semen

  • Vaginal fluids

  • Breast milk

Common ways HIV is transmitted:

  • Unprotected sex

  • Sharing needles or injection equipment

  • From mother to baby during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding

HIV is NOT spread through:

  • Hugging, kissing, or casual contact

  • Sharing food or drinks

  • Sneezing or coughing

Why Testing is So Important

You cannot tell if someone has HIV just by looking—and many people have no symptoms.

Getting tested:

  • Gives you peace of mind

  • Helps you take control of your health

  • Protects your partners and community

If you test positive, there is treatment—and it works.

Treatment & U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable)

With consistent treatment (antiretroviral therapy):

  • HIV can become undetectable in the body

  • When HIV is undetectable, it cannot be transmitted through sex

This is known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable).

Treatment is:

  • Highly effective

  • Often just one pill a day

  • Life-saving and life-changing

Prevention Options

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)

PrEP is a daily medication for people who do not have HIV but may be at risk.

  • Reduces risk of getting HIV by up to 99% when taken consistently

  • Safe and widely available

  • A powerful prevention tool

PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)

PEP is emergency medication taken after possible exposure to HIV.

  • Must be started within 72 hours

  • Taken for 28 days

  • Can prevent HIV infection

If you think you’ve been exposed—don’t wait. Seek care immediately.
